So it is the season of red. Chocolate candies. Overpriced, cliche Hallmark cards.  This week we celebrate Valentine’s Day.

It is interesting that Jesus, gives His us the command to love one another.  Think about it.  If love were easy.  If it were natural.  If it was our default, He wouldn’t have to command us to do it.  He wouldn’t have to model it either.  He might just say, “good work!” “carry on as you already are doing!”

But it does not come naturally.  It is NOT our default.  Our default is “ME FIRST.”  Even in a “loving” relationship, we can be completely self-centered, seeking only what WE WANT, only being concerned for OUR NEEDS being met. 

Christ HAS to command us to love.  And He HAS to show us how to do it.  REAL LOVE.  SELFLESS LOVE.  ENDURING LOVE.  GODLY LOVE.  A love that pours out, that gives up one’s own preferences.  A love that lays down one’s own life.  A love that flows from the very heart of God.  A love that bleeds upon a wooden cross.  Jesus Has to show us this love.

And He does.
