The BIG Picture: Session 6
Hebrews 4.14-5.10
It happens typically about once a year. Apple releases an update for my iPhone.
The update, usually available in autumn, falls in line with newer models that the company is launching. Interestingly, there is a consistent message with each release: the update will provide my phone with new features and will make it perform better. With the update, come statements like, “…the update provides a new interface design,” “New features for the camera…” “Better assistance from Siri…” “Better battery consumption…” These are the words that are repeated. These are the words that are used and understood:
NEW and BETTER.
It is what we expect. Right?
Of course it is! We consumers EXPECT to see significant change—remarkable improvement—in the updates and models that are released. As a matter of fact, a tech will often be chastised if there is little change in its product from one year to another.
We expect this from our phones. What about our hearts?
We are a new creation, when we come to salvation in Jesus. Definitely! But we are not complete in the full scope of that transformation. We are not the finished product. Jesus continues to make us NEW. He continues to make us BETTER. As the writer of Hebrews pens, Jesus is our Great High Priest, who understands our weakness, who petitions God on our behalf and who gives to us His grace and strength. WE are every day being made BETTER and NEW!
